Located close to central London, Moorfields Eye Hospital celebrated its bicentennial year in 2005 and is viewed as one of the world’s leading eye hospitals. It is a renowned centre for the delivery of care to NHS patients and provides a postgraduate centre for teaching and education. Together with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Moorfields has the world’s largest research programme and is regarded as being at the cutting-edge in terms of innovation and research.
With patients treated for both simple and rare eye disorders at the main City Road hospital site or at several other locations in and around the city, Moorfields has recently seen a record 400,000 outpatient attendances, and 30,000 inpatient and day case procedures, including 10,000 laser eye treatments.
Laser Eye Surgery at Moorfields
A number of laser eye treatments are offered at Moorfields. These include:
- Wavefront LASIK
- Surface Wavefront laser treatments (PRK and LASEK)
- Refractive Lens Exchange Implants
Moorfields currently employs 1,700 staff at its main hospital and satellite sites, including 124 internationally renowned consultant eye specialists who are regularly invited to attend and speak at various conferences and seminars.
Of particular note is Mr Bruce Allen. His surgical excellence in the area of Wavefront intra-LASIK, in addition to other forms of laser eye surgery and transplantation, has attracted many positive reviews.
Similarly, the work of Professor David F Garway-Heath, who has published widely and prolifically on a number of ophthalmology related subjects, is highly regarded, with the consultant opthalmologist having invented new techniques for visual field testing, imaging and eye pressure measurement.
Private patients are catered for within the hospital through the exclusive Moorfields Private division which provides a comprehensive service for self-paying or medical insured patients. All private laser refractive surgery is now carried out in the new Laser Suite on the Cumberlege Wing.
Laser eye surgery at Moorfields is competitively priced with LASIK treatment starting at around £2,100 per eye (including the consultant’s fee). The initial consultation can cost between £100 and £175.
